Designer Kim Jones’s latest collection, unveiled in Paris, mixes punky mohair and zips with zebra prints and safari suits – and gets the thumbs up from David Beckham and Kate Moss

Forget billion-euro financial results, the more accurate marker of the power a label wields in the world of luxury fashion was on display backstage at the Louis Vuitton menswear show in Paris yesterday. There was the world’s most famous supermodel, Kate Moss, dressed head to toe in silky zebra pyjamas from the label’s latest collection, bossing the world’s most famous footballer, David Beckham, to take his turn in front of the cameras and pose for the brand’s Unicef initiative.

Asked whether he was there for the fashion or the football, Beckham emphatically declared: “I’m here for the fashion.” In a week where football and fashion have collided in Paris, the bandwidth for brands and sponsors to flex their muscles has been tight, but there can be no doubt that Louis Vuitton is the most powerful of them all.

Under the creative direction of Demna Gvasalia, Balenciaga reinvented norm tropes while nodding to the fashion house’s heritage

Fashion fans have had to wait 99 years for it and when it came – atop a secondary school in central Paris – it did not disappoint. On Wednesday, the iconic house of Balenciaga unveiled its first menswear catwalk show, with a collection that focused almost exclusively on exaggerated tailoring. It was, said designer Demna Gvasalia, wearing jeans tucked into his socks, Reebok pump trainers and smoking a cigarette, “a clean slate”.

The label has produced menswear before – quietly, revealed with presentations – but this collection was the first time that the menswear has come out of the shadows and been given equal billing with womenswear.
